SCRL 2016 Dunsfold Vets Series

Created by Marcus Brueton at 2016-08-12 11:12:02

SCRL Vets League at Dunsfold Park

A regular fixture on the calendar for a growing number of the Paragoni despite their suggestions of external youth and good health. This is a highly contested series attracting many riders ranging from those relatively new to cycling to former Elite/Pro riders. The series is split into two categories for over 40’s and over 50’s. The NPCC attendance varied from week to week but there were always at least two riders and six on one occasion showing good strength to the rest of the bunch.

Our campaign opened with a bang and Austyn taking the win following an early break which held out for eight laps from the chasers. Races 3,4 & 5 saw James Stuart (JS) place well. This good start was then compounded by James taking wins in races 8 and 9 and gaining an 11 point advantage over second place held by Gary Brind of South Downs. With the series coming to a close, race tactics were coming into play. Paul Pickup who was strong, and would get most aggressive rider for the series, secured a win for race 10 with Gary second immediately behind him closing the points gap on James. Race 11 saw Austyn get away again in a small break with 4 to go and securing second but this was welcome as it removed the points available for what had now become a contest between James, Gary and Paul. With only 4 points separating them on the last race it was all to play for.

The Paragoni arrived in numbers for the final race and there was no question of our intent to control the race. After several attacks a small break of three was allowed up the road as they did not matter for the series results. With some heavy man-marking and no chance of James being able to skip off the front it was to be decided on a bunch sprint. While mentally it was quite simple to agree a plan, it is fair to say reliable execution of lead out trains is not so easy at an amateur level…. the rest as they say it history! The sprint was furious as to be expected and former Paragon Steve Calland successfully lead out Gary for a clear win in the bunch sprint. James finished 9th. The series was won by Gary Brind of South Downs, second James Stuart and third Paul Pickup (Pedal Heaven).

Austyn finished 5th in the 40’s series and Duncan 9th in the 50’s series. This was a great series of team racing for the Paragon and the results would not have been possible with our support from Ian L, Marcus, Duncan, Andy T and Jonny M.
