SUMMARY:Paragon Christmas lunch
DESCRIPTION:It’s back! One of the most popular events in the club’s social calendar is making a comeback in 2022 – the Paragon Christmas lunch. This year we’ll be returning to the Inn on the Pond in Merstham\, perhaps for the first time since 2010. \nThe Christmas lunch has always been a very informal affair with members encouraged to turn up on their bikes\, often straight from the (strangely competitive) downhill competition on Tillburstow Hill\, Godstone. Something else that we’re bringing back this year. Sadly it won’t be happening on the same day as the weather forecast is predicting sub-zero temperatures. \nThe event is now sold out as we’ve filled the pub. But all members are welcome to join us in the bar for a drink before we sit down to eat at 1pm.

SUMMARY:***CANCELLED*** Keith Butler handicap championships
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, we’ve had to cancel this years Keith Butler Handicap Champs due to not having enough British Cycling accredited marshals for the Loxwood course. Other venues were considered\, then dismissed for various reasons. We will look to host this race next year.  \n  \nWhat: Keith Butler Handicap Championships Surrey League Road race\nWhen: Sunday September 11\nWhere: Loxwood area \nThe club needs your help to run the Surrey League championships this September\, a race now named after former member Keith Butler. For those who didn’t know Keith\, he was a life long member of the Paragon and started the Surrey Cycle Racing league in the 1980s. \nHe won both the British professional and amateur road race titles in the 1960s (the first rider to ever win both titles) and represented Great Britain at the 1965 road world championships. He was also a good friend to everyone at the Paragon. His father Stan was a member\, as was his son and daughter Gethin and Alison (who both rode internationally.) \nKeith and his family were pillars of the club and so it’s important that we put on a great event that carries his name. \nWe need 16 members to help the Surrey League put this event on\, doing things from marshalling to driving and making the teas at the HQ. Please block out this day in your diary\, we’ll be in touch soon to give more details.

SUMMARY:Club pub night
DESCRIPTION:Where: Stepping Stones pub\, Westhumble\nWhen: Tuesday\, August 2 \nOur August pub night is at the Stepping Stones pub near Dorking. This follows on from our club hill Climb championshions on the climb of Ranmore hairpin. This is a great event to try – a 3 – 5 minute effort\, depending on your fitness – and to watch. Club members tend to congregate on the hairpin corner near the top of the climb to cheer their clubmates on. \nFollowing the race\, we roll down the hill to the pub that has a good menu and plenty of indoor an outdoor seating. Come and join us to learn a bit more about the club\, who we are and what we’re all about. Everyone welcome.

SUMMARY:Club hill climb champs
DESCRIPTION:Come and take on the lung busting ascent of Ranmore hairpin and see where you rank amongst the club’s best climbers. The club champs is a popular event to ride and spectate at with people often gathering on the hairpin near the top of the climb to cheer people on. \nThe last two years the event has been won in around 3:03 minutes\, with the fastest winning time being closer to 2:37mins\, for the short\, but steep climb up through the trees. \nThe first rider off will be around 7:30pm but be sure to get there in good time and warm up. Please let Stephen Roach know whether or not you wish to ride before the event (club members can do so on any of the What’s App groups). Although if you turn up at the last minute\, we’ll fit you in. \nThe race is followed by a club social at the Stepping Stones pub at the bottom of the climb in Westhumble\, between Dorking and Leatherhead. There is plenty of parking at the top of the hill\, nearest train station is Westhumble\, or it’s a five minute ride from either Dorking or Leatherhead.

SUMMARY:Pro kit wa.... celebration coast ride
DESCRIPTION:Don your finest replica kit and join us for a ride to Brighton and back this July. While we’re out in our club kit most weekends there’s something to be said for heading out for a ride feeling like you’re Tadej Pogačar / Chris Froome / Lance Armstrong / Marco Pantani …. you get the idea. \nThe more outlandish the kit the better\, and extra points for anyone with socks to match their jersey and shorts.  Or you could go one better and mix and match your kit. Why not go all out and offend everyone’s eyes with a pair of white and green Credit Agricole shorts matched with the classic colourful squares of the Mapei jersey? Literally anything goes for this ride. \nIf you don’t have any pro kit feel free to wear whatever you like. But remember\, there’s always ebay. \nThe route\nWe’ll be leaving Caterham at 8am\, passing through Reigate (pick up from Maison du velo around 8.25am) and heading out via Rusper\, Hammer ponds\, Twineham and up over Devils Dyke before dropping down for elevenses at the Regency Cafe on the seafront. \nThe return leg is up past the race course and on to Ditchling Beacon\, then back through the lanes the reverse route of the London to Brighton ride – Wivelsfield\, Ardingley\, Turners Hill\, South Nutfield. \nThis (approx) 85 mile ride is open to members and friends of members. A good level of fitness is required\, although people have been known to get the train back from Brighton.

SUMMARY:Club time trial #9 - Horne
DESCRIPTION:Our final TT of the summer is our interclub against the Redhill\, hosted by them on their regular circuit around Horne\, near Lingfield. This 3.3 mile circuit is ridden three times  to give a distance of 9.9 miles. It’s almost entirely pan flat with just three turns to navigate. Sign on is in the golf club’s car park in Croydon Barn Lane and we’ll be in the clubhouse for drinks afterwards for another pub night. As this is a Redhill CC event only club members can ride\, and must pre enter the event through TT sec Simon Smythe. It was another win for the Paragon in this event last year\, giving us a clean sweep of interclubs. \nThe Course \nStart in Croydon Barn Lane outside the golf club\, then immediately turn left into Bones Lane. After approximately one mile take a left into Brickhouse lane to head north again and turn back into Croydon Barn Lane where you ride through the start and continue around again. Complete three laps of this circuit. \nIn line with CTT regs\, all riders must wear a helmet and have a working front and rear light.

SUMMARY:Club time trial #8 - Newdigate
DESCRIPTION:Our final TT on the Newdigate circuit takes place on July 12 this year. With a prize for the overall series winner on offer\, will we see it going down to the wire\, or will someone have sealed the victory by now? Who knows\, but at least we should have a nice warm summers evening to enjoy riding round this quiet country circuit. As ever\, please get to the start (on the Rusper road\, just south of Newdigate village) in time to sign on and get your number. \nThe course \nHead south down Rusper road (toward Rusper) before turning left into Partridge lane and following it all the way round to the finish by the 30 mile-an-hour sign as you come back into Newdigate. The course is rolling\, but with no climbs. There is usually minimal traffic on the course\, but please look out for farm traffic and private driveways. Riders can use either a road or a TT bike. \nStart line location on What3words – honest.shorts.elaborate \nIn line with CTT regs\, all riders must wear a helmet and have a working front and rear light.

SUMMARY:July's Thursday evening gravel thrash
DESCRIPTION:Come and join the Norwood Paragon and discover some new off-road routes between Reigate and Oxted. This is a social ride lead by a member of the Paragon\, most of which is off road\, so a chance to ride and chat as you discover sections of the Greensands and North Downs way. \nThere’s one big hill climbing out of Oxted up to the North Downs way but the rest is fairly tame. The ride starts and finishes at the Inn on the Pond in Merstham which is on Sustrans route 21\, just east of Redhill. You can pick up this marked route in Noke Drive\, just behind Redhill train station. From there it’s a short ride to the start point. \nParts of the route may change slightly from the map displayed below which is to give a general idea of where we’ll be going. \n \n<strong>What you’ll need</strong> \nAn off road bike with all the usual spares including tubes\, pump\, tyre levers and multitools. Lights will also be needed as it’ll likely be getting dark when we get to the finish point. Water is essential\, and bring food if you think you’ll need it for a 1.30hr ride. Dress according to the weather and keep in mind it will get cold quickly once the sun goes down. We recommend a gravel bike\, but mtbs and ‘cross bikes would be fine. \nThe ride will be leaving the Inn on the Pond at 7.00pm\, please don’t be late. If you’d like to know more you can contact us via info@norwoodparagon.co.uk

SUMMARY:*****CANCELLED*****Club time trial #6 - Newdigate *****CANCELLED*****
DESCRIPTION:*****CANCELLED***** roadworks on course 🙁 \n  \nWe’re back on the Newdigate course for our first interclub of the year against the Dorking CC. It’s the same 7.3 mile course used in May\, but with a bit more of a competitive edge with club bragging rights on the line. Interclubs are won by the club with the fastest aggregate time of their first six riders\, meaning these events are often won by the club who get the most riders out. We won this event last year\, and we’ll need our fastest riders out if we’re going to do it again. \nFirst rider off at 7.30pm\, so please give yourself more time than a usual club tt as there will be more riders. We also need to know in advance who is going to ride\, so please contact our TT sec Simon Smythe via the email below\, or via the clubs What’s App groups. \nWe will be having a pub night social gathering at the Six Bells pub in Newdigate after the race\, so even if you’re not racing\, please do come along and join us for a drink afterwards. \n*****CANCELLED*****

SUMMARY:June's Thursday evening gravel thrash
DESCRIPTION:Come and join the Norwood Paragon and discover some new off-road routes in and around Merstham\, Bletchingley\, Oxted and Caterham. The June ride will take in this new route down to Outwood along some lovely hardpacked paths around fields and through woods\, most of which you wouldn’t even know were there. There are also some lovely houses on the route\, hidden away from the usual roads we ride. \nthe first half of this route is quite flat with the first climb coming when we get back to Godstone. From there we climb up to the Caterham view point before making a decision on where to go next. If time is against us we’ll drop straight back down to Merstham\, if not we’ll chuck in another loop around Caterham and Chaldon. \n \n<strong>What you’ll need</strong> \nAn off road bike with all the usual spares including tubes\, pump\, tyre levers and multitools. Lights will also be needed as it’ll likely be getting dark when we get to the finish point. Water is essential\, and bring food if you think you’ll need it for a 1.45hr ride.

SUMMARY:Club time trial #5 - Crowhurst
DESCRIPTION:Join us on June 7 for time trial number five around Crowhurst\, just south of Godstone. It’s flatter than the Bletchingly circuit\, but does have one climb followed by a smaller\, short\, sharp kicker before the finish line. The loop is ridden twice to make a 12.7mile event. The start and finish are in Crowhurst lane where there is minimal parking. Start time is once again 7.30pm so arrive with plenty of time to sign up and get your number on your back. \nThe course \nStart in Crowhurst lane and continue to the end of the road where you turn left on to Tandridge lane. Follow this to the end where you turn left into Ray Lane by the Red Barn pub. Stay on Ray Lane for just under a mile before turning left into Lingfield Common Road (if you find yourself in Lingfield\, you’ve missed the turning). After half a mile turn into Crowhurst lane and follow the road all the way to the start line where you repeat the course. \nStartline on What3words – priced.sailor.coffee \nIn line with CTT regs\, all riders must wear a helmet and have a working front and rear light.

SUMMARY:CLUB GRAVEL RIDE: CATERHAM – DOVER
DESCRIPTION:What: Gravel ride\nWhen: Thursday\, June 2\nDistance: 86m\nAbility level: Technical – medium\, Fitness – high \nSimon Richardson will be leading a gravel ride from Caterham to Dover this summer\, open to all members and friends of members. It’s a big day out following the North Downs Way and Pilgrims Way down through Kent to finish at Dover Harbour for a dip in the sea. \nAlthough there are only two major climbs on this route\, fitness required is high due to the length of the ride. Technically it’s not too demanding with a mixture of bridleway\, tarmac\, tracks and paths making gravel bikes the best option to cope with the mixture of terrain and keep the average speed up. A cross bike would work just as well and if it’s dry a file tread tyre is recommended. A mountain bike would likely be too slow\, so not recommended for this ride. \nThe meet point for the ride is at the bottom of Tupwood Lane where the Sustrans route 21 crosses the A22. For users of the What3Words app\, thats forget.coffee.fancy. The ride will be leaving at 6am\, please do not be late. \nThe aim is to reach the Dirty Habit pub in Hollingbourne for tea or coffee at 9am\, Canterbury for lunch around 12.30pm and Dover harbour for fish and chips and a dip in the sea by 2pm. The finish point on What3Words is depth.dignitary.remote. Simon rode the whole of the North Downs way in two days last last autumn\, writing about it for CW. Check it out if you want to know a bit more about the ride. \nIf you want to look at the route in more detail it’s plotted here on Komoot. Premium Strava users can download the gpx here. \n \nWhat will I need?\nAll the usual spares including tube(s) pump\, tyre levers and tools and a whatever you think you’ll need for the journey home\, change of clothes etc. The two stops mentioned above are for food and drink\, but there is little else on the route. It goes through a few small towns but skirts around most built up areas\, meaning you’ll need to be self sufficient with enough food for the ride. Swimming trunks and a lightweight towel are essential for those who fancy a swim. Please no mankinis. \nGetting home\nTrains from Dover Priory station take 1hr 5m to get to central London with prices starting at around £37. It’s a fast service so please check how to book a bike on. Otherwise invite friends or family down for a day on Dover beach (pebble beach\, but nice on a summers day with plenty of places to get food) and get a lift home. They could even meet us on the way. Hollingbourne is just by Leeds Castle (M20 junction 8) and Canterbury is always good for a day trip. \nPlease let Simon know if you intend on riding via info@norwoodparagon.co.uk \n

SUMMARY:The Paragon Mountain Bikers
DESCRIPTION:The Paragon Mountain bikers were out in force over the weekend. myself Nick FFoulkes\, Dave Mascall\, Steve Watkins and Jason Humphrries all took part in the Battle on The Beach mountain bike race in Wales.\nThis is a 45km three lap race which starts of on a small piece of twisty tarmac with 700 riders heading onto the beach. The first obsticle is deep sand as you leave the tarmac then the sand becomes hard flat and fast. The guys on Cyclocross bikes get away . But after 3km we turn hard right up a climb in deep sand again on to a uneaven double track riding around the dunes. Then gravel and tight undulating single track and more deep sand where the fatters tyres of the mountain bikers and plus\, fat bikes start to make groung. Ending up in the grassed arena and another two laps.\nI came 21st in Grand Vets 157 overall\, Steve W 48th in grand vets and 375 overall\,Dave 80th in vets and 190 overall\, Jason 417 vets and 487 overall.\nI also took part in the one lap night race and came in 26th overall.\nA great race with lovely weather. Well done guys
