The 2022 mountain biking race season commenced on Sunday 27th February with the first race of the Gorrick Spring Series, held at Area 51, Frimley. Racing in Super Vets was Steve Watkins, in Grand Vets, Dave Mascall. Both were racing three laps of the tight singletrack-heavy course.
After a much needed warm up lap, Mascall’s race commenced at 11:19, with Watkins chasing two minutes later at 11:21. Mascall rode the first half lap hard, before realising the pace was too hot & dropped back through the pack. He rallied in the final lap & eventually finished 8 minutes down on the winner, Paul Byford (TheCogFather RT / Crawley Wheelers). After a poor race at the same venue last year, Mascall viewed this as a stronger ride which bodes well for the next round in March.
Watkins, not feeling great after suffering with health issues in the preceding week, started himself from the back of the grid on his trusty superfast Ti singlespeed. Not expecting to last the race, he soon realised that even in his sub-par state, he was still considerably quicker than many of the riders in front of him & started advancing his race position. This was short lived though as he suffered a nasty crash on a particularly technical downhill. Hitting the ground face-first ultimately forced a DNF for Watkins. However, with a strong first lap time, he is clearly carrying some fitness from his winter training, so will hopefully fare much better for Round Two.
