MTB Action – Gorrick Spring Series #2

Norwood Paragon’s mountain biking race season continued yesterday, Sunday 20th March, with the second & final race of the Gorrick Spring Series in Frimley. Racing similar terrain to Round One – but on an entirely different course, was Steve Watkins in Super Vets & Dave Mascall in Grand Vets.

Following a brisk sighting lap, mainly to figure out what had changed since the last round (lots), Mascall was looking to improve his placing this time around. The Grand Vets field had the largest field of the day with 30+ riders, so Mascall was hoping for some close competition. Starting quickly & riding comfortably within the top 20 for the entire race, Mascall finished in 19th place, eight minutes down on winner, Nigel Brown (unattached).

Watkins, starting two minutes behind Mascall, had clearly had his Weetabix as Mascall was caught with half a lap of his race still remaining. Looking focussed & at home on his Lynskey singlespeed, Watkins charged around the course only hindered by a minor spill when riders in front stalled on a particularly tricky section of the course. This unfortunate mishap cost him a place & ultimately, a podium finish, ending up in 4th place. This was an agonising 10s behind third & 3:19 behind race winner Robert Jackson (also unattached).

The next mountain bike event for the Paragon will be the 12:12 TORQ in your Sleep on 14th May at Minley Manor. Norwood will be fielding both a solo six-hour entry and a 12-hour four-man team. If you are interested in participating in this, or in one of our regular social rides, please contact Dave or Steve on info@norwoodparagon.co.uk
